Let’s talk stress: A simple conversation is changing care for Veterans

Supporting Veteran wellbeing at VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend

The Primary Care “Let’s Talk Stress” campaign at VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Healthcare System was launched in July 2026 to make brief, supportive conversations about stress a routine part of Veteran care and to connect those conversations to practical resources that improve health and wellbeing. The campaign is grounded in a simple message: Stress is common, stress affects health, and even a brief conversation in the primary care setting can lead to meaningful support and better health outcomes for Veterans.

Why the campaign matters

Campaign materials explain that stress affects long-term health across multiple areas, including sleep, mood and chronic disease management. It also emphasizes that brief, intentional conversations can strengthen rapport, reduce stigma and improve care outcomes by helping Veterans feel heard and supported.

The primary care approach

The campaign gives primary care teams a practical framework for discussing stress during routine visits: normalize the experience, validate feelings, keep the conversation brief but intentional, connect stress to health, offer simple coping strategies and share available resources. Suggested questions, such as “How has stress been affecting your daily life?” and “What helps you cope when things feel overwhelming?” are designed to invite honest conversation and uncover needs that may not surface during a standard medical visit.

The campaign also gives teams clear guidance on when to consider a warm handoff, including when stress is interfering with daily functioning, when a Veteran is facing major life challenges or when there are safety or crisis concerns. This supports timely connection to additional services and reinforces a team-based model of care.

Veteran-facing message

Veteran-facing materials frame the campaign using simple steps to take regarding stress: Talk, learn and thrive. It also recognizes the difficulty of dealing with stress with the slogan “Stress Is Tough, So Are You” printed on a rubber wristband handed out to Veterans during clinical encounters. Veterans are encouraged to talk with their VA primary care provider about how they are feeling, learn strategies to manage stress and build resilience, and use those tools to improve wellbeing and stay strong for what matters most.

Resources supporting the campaign

The campaign is strengthened by direct connections to Whole Health and Healthy Living services, so that stress conversations can lead to immediate next steps. Whole Health offerings across VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend include tai chi, qi gong, yoga, meditation, mindfulness, health coaching, biofeedback for stress, hypnosis for pain and anxiety, acupuncture services and lifestyle medicine support focused on stress management, sleep, nutrition, movement and healthy routines.

Early impact on Veterans

Early campaign impact is evident in the way primary care teams are using conversations about stress to create meaningful connection with Veterans and to surface needs that might otherwise go unaddressed. By normalizing stress, validating Veteran experiences and linking Veterans to Whole Health, Healthy Living, Social Work and VA Crisis line resources when appropriate, the campaign is helping Veterans access support earlier and in ways that feel practical, respectful and relevant to daily life.

One Veteran identified during the campaign was experiencing significant stress related to difficulty paying essential household bills, including water and electricity. During a clinical encounter, nursing staff recognized the seriousness of this stressor and connected the Veteran with a social worker who helped set up autopay for recurring bills. This intervention reduced the risk of future utility disconnection, which had happened several times in the past and had caused major stress for the Veteran. With that immediate burden reduced, the Veteran is now better able to focus on their chronic health conditions and engage more effectively in self-care and their ongoing treatment plan.

The campaign’s early momentum shows an important shift: Stress is being addressed not as a separate issue, but as a core part of whole-person care. That approach is helping Veterans build resilience, improve confidence in their care team and strengthen the connection between everyday wellbeing and long-term health.
