Check the official source for current information.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreaker.com\/podcast\/vha-homeless-programs-ending-veteran-homelessness--5553394\" rel=\"noopener\">Ending Veteran Homelessness<\/a> podcast created a mini-series to introduce the basic facts on Veteran homelessness and how VA is working to solve it.<\/p>\n<p>Expert guests from throughout VA\u2019s homeless programs join us to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide a high-level overview, including the definition of homelessness, factors that increase the risk of becoming homeless and progress to date in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreaker.com\/episode\/an-introduction-to-veteran-homelessness-part-1-what-is-veteran-homelessness--60928110\" rel=\"noopener\">part one<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Give information about the Veterans we serve, their demographic trends and which subpopulations may need particular attention, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreaker.com\/episode\/an-introduction-to-veteran-homelessness-part-2-who-do-we-serve--60928173\" rel=\"noopener\">second installment<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Review all of VA\u2019s homeless programs and services to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreaker.com\/episode\/an-introduction-to-veteran-homelessness-part-3-tools-in-the-toolkit--60928219\" rel=\"noopener\">wrap up the series<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 1: Defining homelessness<\/h2>\n<p>We kicked off the series by diving into the definition of homelessness under the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Act of 2009. A Veteran is considered homeless if:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They lack a fixed nighttime residence and are living in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or places not meant for habitation.<\/li>\n<li>They or their family will lose their primary nighttime residence within 14 days.<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019re an unaccompanied youth under 25 or a family with children who are couch surfing and moving frequently.<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019re fleeing domestic violence or another life-threatening situation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Listen to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreaker.com\/episode\/an-introduction-to-veteran-homelessness-part-1-what-is-veteran-homelessness--60928110\" rel=\"noopener\">episode<\/a> and download the accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/HOMELESS\/docs\/podcast\/Intro_to_Vet_Homelessness_Part1.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">PDF guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 2: Individualizing services<\/h2>\n<p>Understanding the demographics of Veterans facing homelessness allows us to tailor our programs and provide services in an equitable, culturally competent way.<\/p>\n<p>The second part of the mini-series focuses on demographic considerations, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Race. Our racial equity data is helping us to ensure that we\u2019re effectively serving all Veteran subpopulations. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Age. Veterans facing homelessness are older than ever before, with the number of homeless Veterans over 65 growing by 71% in the last 5 years.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Gender. The decline in homelessness among women Veterans is not keeping pace with the overall decline in Veteran homelessness.<\/li>\n<li>Gender identity and sexual orientation. LGBTQ+ Veterans are also more likely to experience homelessness.<\/li>\n<li>Geography. While most homeless Veterans are concentrated in urban areas, we need to make sure that resources are available to the 20% of homeless Veterans in rural areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreaker.com\/episode\/an-introduction-to-veteran-homelessness-part-2-who-do-we-serve--60928173\" rel=\"noopener\">the second episode<\/a> of our mini-series.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 3: How we can help<\/h2>\n<p>The final part of the mini-series was a special guest bonanza with 12 experts dropping in to speak about the approach VA is taking to end Veteran homelessness and the various services we can provide.<\/p>\n<p>The coordinated entry system goes hand-in-hand with One Team, explained Molly Batschelet, national program coordinator for coordinated entry systems integration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoordinated entry eliminates the need for somebody to go from agency to agency to sign up for services.
