Check the official source for current information.<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhomelessday.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">World Homeless Day<\/a>, it is important to acknowledge the critical housing challenges Veterans face coupled with the growing issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/rental-listing-scams\" rel=\"noopener\">rental listing scams<\/a>. Veterans experiencing homelessness are an especially at-risk subset of the Veteran population for this scam. Homelessness can affect Veterans due to housing shortages, rising living costs, mental health effects from service (e.g., post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, etc.), and a lack of support networks. Unfortunately, scammers often exploit these factors to target homeless Veterans for financial gain and\/or to gain access to Personally Identifiable Information (PII).<\/p>\n<p>People often utilize online platforms\u2014such as social media groups\u2014to find places for suitable housing. However, scammers target those searching for housing by posing as landlords and sharing fake listings. These listings can be convincing and use legitimate addresses and photos of the property to deceive potential renters. Bad actors pressure applicants to quickly sign a lease and <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/consumer-alerts\/2023\/08\/you-got-apartment-spot-rental-listing-scams-you-pay\" rel=\"noopener\">submit payments<\/a>, such as non-refundable application fees, the first month\u2019s rent, and\/or a deposit before seeing the property. Once paid, the fraudster will cease all communications, scamming the individual out of their money and potential housing. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>VA is committed to ensuring Veterans have a safe place to live and know how to <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/consumer-alerts\/2024\/03\/how-spot-hard-spot-rental-scams\" rel=\"noopener\">recognize rental scams<\/a> to protect themselves against fraud. To better inform Veterans when searching for housing, VA provides the following guidance.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warning signs of rental scams<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pressure to sign: Scammers may try to pressure individuals to quickly sign leases or pay rental fees without touring the property.<\/li>\n<li>Refusal to tour or meet in person: Scammers may deny property tour requests and provide excuses not to meet in real life.<\/li>\n<li>Low rental prices: Listings may advertise rental prices well below the market rates to entice victims. The advertised rates may seem too good to be true.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Unconventional payment methods: Scammers may only allow payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. These payment methods should be a red flag as they are uncommon for housing transactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevention strategies to remember \u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check for duplicate advertisements. Search the address listed online to see if other advertisements are affiliated with the same addresses or photos from different landlords or rental companies.<\/li>\n<li>Research the rental company or landlord. Check the rental company\u2019s website to confirm the property is listed. If the listing is by an individual, search for their name on the internet\u00a0to confirm legitimacy. Add words such as \u201cscam\u201d to searches to see if there are any reports of similar scams.<\/li>\n<li>Do not sign or pay before viewing. Never sign a lease or submit a payment for a property you haven\u2019t seen in person.<\/li>\n<li>Compare rental prices. Research similar properties to determine if the rental cost seems valid.<\/li>\n<li>Do not share PII or financial information. Never share sensitive information with the rental company, landlord or anyone claiming affiliation without verification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Veterans need to know they are not alone. VA provides comprehensive support for Veterans, including those who face the harsh realities of homelessness. VA offers a wide range of resources to help homeless Veterans regain stability and access the services they need. If you are the victim of a rental scam, call the police and give them all the details: texts, emails, lease agreement information, listing information, etc.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a Veteran who is\u00a0homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at (877) 4AID-VET (877-424-3838) for assistance.\u00a0You can also call or visit your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/find-locations\" rel=\"noopener\">local VA Medical Center<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/HOMELESS\/crrc-list.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Resource and Referral Center,<\/a> where VA staff are ready to help. Explore\u00a0www.va.gov\/homeless\u00a0to learn about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/HOMELESS\/about_homeless_programs.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">VA programs<\/a>\u00a0for Veterans who are homeless and share that information with others.<\/p>\n<p>If a Veteran is missing a VA benefits payment,\u00a0identifies a discrepancy in payments or finds\u00a0suspicious activity within their direct deposit\u00a0account, contact VA immediately at\u00a0\u200b1-800-827-1000.\u200b If an entity is projecting misinformation or has\u00a0questionable business practices, file a\u00a0complaint with the Federal Trade Commission\u00a0(FTC) at\u00a0reportfraud.ftc.gov.
