For the last 48 years, descendants of Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud and other Native Americans of the Lakota Nation have gathered in Rapid City, S.D.,\u00a0to attend the\u00a0Lakota Nation Invitational (LNI). Held in December, LNI offers thousands of Lakota a chance to\u00a0participate\u00a0in sporting competitions, traditional dances and ceremonies, business plan competitions, informational presentations and a plethora of other activities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Casandra Kelting and Craig Filbeck, coordinators with the\u00a0Native American Direct Loan<\/a>\u00a0(NADL) program at VA,\u00a0staffed a booth at the event and provided a\u00a0comprehensive\u00a0presentation\u00a0on how the NADL <\/a>program helps Native American Veterans and service members buy, build and renovate homes. They\u00a0also\u00a0answered questions, distributed information and helped\u00a0event attendees\u00a0start the NADL application process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are honored that we can connect with Native American Veterans at events like this, where we share vital information on housing opportunities, collaborate with tribes and also join in tribal celebrations,\u201d said Filbeck. \u201cWe were deeply moved watching a traditional blanket ceremony, when the Lakota tribes honored a high-ranking member of the military who helped Native American Veterans over his years of service, and the Grand Entrance, when Native American Veterans led members of the tribes into the event.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kelting and Filbeck\u00a0also\u00a0met with tribal leaders of the Rosebud Indian Reservation, where they inspected new homes being built for Native American Veterans with\u00a0assistance\u00a0from\u00a0the NADL program. Located on the windswept plains of South Dakota, the homes are part of a new development that\u00a0provides housing opportunities for Native Americans\u00a0who want to live on their tribal lands.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The NADL coordinators closed out their trip with a visit to the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the\u00a0Rosebud Indian Reservation, where they met with senior officials and shared information about the NADL program.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Congress\u00a0established the NADL program<\/a>\u00a0in 1992\u00a0to help address the challenges\u00a0Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, Alaska Natives and Pacific Islanders have\u00a0historically\u00a0faced in\u00a0accessing mortgages to buy homes on federal trust lands. Since the program\u2019s\u00a0inception, VA has signed 118\u00a0Memorandums of Understanding<\/a>\u00a0(MOUs) with tribal\u00a0governments,\u00a0opening up\u00a0NADLs\u00a0for usage with those tribes.\u00a0NADL benefits include low interest rates, no down payments and no private mortgage insurance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition to\u00a0the\u00a0NADL\u00a0program, Native American Veterans can also apply for a VA-guaranteed home loan<\/a> for use on fee-simple properties (complete\u00a0ownership of land outside federal trust lands).\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

VA is committed to working with tribal communities throughout the country to expand the NADL program. <\/p>\n
