Check the official source for current information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WASHINGTON<\/strong> \u2014 Today, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced that between October 2023 and August 2024, it housed 43,116 Veterans experiencing homelessness, surpassing <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-2024-goals-to-end-veteran-homelessness\/\">its fiscal year 2024 goal to house 41,000 Veterans<\/a> one month before the end of the fiscal year. VA has also ensured that 96.3% of the Veterans housed so far this fiscal year have not returned to homelessness, and engaged 38,476 unsheltered Veterans to ensure they have access to the housing and other wraparound services they need.<\/p>\n<p>Preventing and eliminating Veteran homelessness is a top priority for VA and the entire Biden-Harris Administration. Between <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-housed-more-than-40000-homeless-veterans-in-2022\/\">2022<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-housed-more-than-46000-homeless-veterans-in-2023\/\">2023<\/a>, VA permanently housed nearly 87,000 Veterans. As a result of these efforts, the number of Veterans experiencing homelessness in the U.S. has fallen by over 4% since early 2020 and by more than 52% since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo person who has served this country should ever have to experience homelessness,\u201d said <strong>VA Secretary Denis McDonough.<\/strong> \u201cAs a result of this year\u2019s efforts, more than 43,000 formerly homeless Veterans now have access to the homes that they deserve. And make no mistake: we won\u2019t rest until every Veteran has a safe, stable, accessible, and affordable home to call their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VA has also made progress in combating Veteran homelessness in the Greater Los Angeles area, providing 1,647 homeless Veterans with permanent housing so far this fiscal year \u2014 the most of any city in America (for the third year in a row) and exceeding VA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-2024-goals-to-end-veteran-homelessness\/\">FY 2024 goals<\/a> for this region by 2.6%. Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/lacounty.gov\/2024\/07\/03\/veteran-homelessness-drops-22-9-from-year-before\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Point-in Time count<\/a> revealed a 22.9% reduction in Veterans experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles between 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden-Harris Administration have taken considerable steps this year to combat Veteran homelessness. This week, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness released the <a href=\"https:\/\/usich.gov\/news-events\/news\/usich-releases-first-ever-federal-homelessness-prevention-framework\" rel=\"noopener\">federal government\u2019s first ever framework for homelessness prevention<\/a> and launched a new series spotlighting local and federal efforts to prevent homelessness. Last month, VA <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-awards-over-800-million-in-grants-to-help-homeless-and-at-risk-veterans-and-their-families\/\">awarded more than $800 million in grants<\/a> via its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/homeless\/ssvf\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Supportive Services for Veteran Families<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/homeless\/gpd.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem<\/a>\u00a0programs, and in July, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-awards-26-8m-in-grants-to-support-legal-services-for-veterans-experiencing-or-at-risk-for-homelessness\/\">awarded over $26 million in grants<\/a> to support legal services for Veterans facing homelessness. Additionally, last month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and VA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/press\/press_releases_media_advisories\/HUD_No_24_202\" rel=\"noopener\">announced policy changes<\/a>\u00a0that will help more Veterans receive housing assistance under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/homeless\/hud-vash.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">HUD-VA Supportive Housing program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>VA\u2019s efforts to combat Veteran homelessness are grounded in reaching out to homeless Veterans, understanding their unique needs, and addressing them. These efforts are built on the evidence-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/HOMELESS\/featuredarticles\/VAs-Implementation-of-Housing-First.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cHousing First\u201d approach<\/a>, which prioritizes getting a Veteran into housing, then providing or connecting them with the wraparound services and supports they need to stay housed, including health care, job training, legal and education assistance, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Every day, VA staff and VA\u2019s community partners nationwide help Veterans find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/homeless\/housing.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">permanent housing<\/a>, such as apartments or houses to rent or own, often with subsidies to help make the housing affordable.
